Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family was also dominated by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. Her goal was to be an instructor of English in a secondary institution. This dream was however cut short when after three years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of university. Her first job was as a spoken word artist who performed her own works during live poetry readings. She later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. In the following years, she managed to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as an actor during The Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was the very first artist to sign to Hidden Beach Recordings.
